Description

Since the inception of the grants program in Decentraland, using project funds to buy land in Genesis City has been viewed as a bad practice. This is because grant funding is meant for projects that contribute to Decentraland, not for grantees to capitalize on land ownership. So, we ask the Community: Should the use of grant money to buy land be a reason for revoking and/or invalidating a Grant submission?

Really there needs greater clarity on specifics going forward. Not retroactively.

Changed my vote to no, proposal should be reworded and specify that grant funds and grant budget cant be asked for the specific purpose of buying land. What the grant recipient does with the pay for their work should not be limited, as long as they delivered on the promised work. I think the purpose of this proposal was to clarify that grant budgets should not be asked specifically for buying land, but it was worded a bit too vague. It can be misunderstood in a way that it includes anyone buying land that was previously a grant recipient with the current way that its worded.

I am changing my vote from Invalid to No. @SinfulMeatStick has a valid point, what if someone wants to invest their earnings into DCL then why this an issue is curious. As long as it is their paycheck then who cares how they spend it.

Voting no , If a grant recipient receives pay for their work through DAO funds and would like to invest into some Decentraland land assets. That should not be a reason for the grant to get revoked.

Voting YES to create an official policy that DAO funds should not be used to purchase lands. However, let's also address the problem that projects need land, and we have land. Can we put into the grant form an easy explanation that the DAO has land available to build on, and guide them to the application process? If I were a dev hoping to build in Decentraland, this would feel much more open and inviting to know there is a clear process to go through to acquire land. Clear communication will probably help build more than anything. :)

No reason to revoke a grant for buying lands if they clearly said they would buy lands with that money and the grant passed. If we don't want lands to be bought, we should just forbid grants from buying lands instead of going through the revocation path right away.

Hello everyone, thank you for your inputs! The idea of this poll is for this requirement to be included in the documentation of the grants program. Today, this practice is frowned upon in the community, and we believe that if it becomes part of the program's terms and conditions, we will reduce the chances of this happening. It's true that there may be fraud, and it's not very easy to track, but the first thing is to define that this is something that should not be done. Regarding renting or leasing, that is completely understandable and expected for a grant, so it's not within the scope of this poll. Greetings and thank you!

I think @Canessa brought up some really great points. It's virtually impossible to track someone who would want to be dishonest, but hopefully the proof of finances could help reveal it. > Let’s say I’m a grant recipient, I get $10,000.00 for my time to program a game… Proof of finances in this example would say "$10k to programming" and that is okay. The issue would arise when the proof of finances says "$10k spent on land" - or when the budget allocates funds to a land purchase. But budget allocation for renting land would be okay. This makes sense to me. I like what @DedHeadJ suggested about disclosing prior intent of purchasing land, but I'm not sure I can think of any situation where a project should be allocating grant budget to land acquisition. Maybe there are special situations, but none that come to mind immediately.

This just in, guy caught trying to sell Land to grantees thinks grantees should be able to buy land

LandlordDaoMar 14, 2024

agree. how will this monitoring it ? also lands Value is so important for the dcl ecosystems. why we don’t doing something boots it instead harmful it ? Lands can bring so much investors to buy mana , mana price up ..money for the DAO.

DedHeadJMar 13, 2024

Hello, If a future grant recipient does not disclose the intent to purchase land with their grant request, then YES, the grant should lead to revocation. However, any grant request that led to purchasing land prior to this POLL should be null and void and then this question would be invalid.

CanessaMar 13, 2024

How will this be tracked? If the wallet receiving grant funds also purchases land from the same wallet? While I agree that DAO funds should not be used to buy land, I see this as extremely difficult to moderate after funds have been released. Let's say I'm a grant recipient, I get $10,000.00 for my time to program a game... That $10K is what I earned for my time, I can spend it on my mortgage, groceries, donuts, Pokemon cards, DCL land, a puppy, etc. How would you intend on monitoring and moderating this? I guess it's pretty hard to stipulate *what* a recipient spends their money on after receiving it if this is the payment for their time.
