Description

The Reference Client (the app at play.decentraland.org) is currently the most widely used Decentraland client. Right now, the Decentraland Foundation is the main contributor to the Reference Client’s open source code base, but given the DAO’s ownership of the client (and the need to have the DAO approve major changes), the Foundation is hindered in how quickly and effectively it can develop new features and improvements. To overcome this hurdle, the Foundation is suggesting that the DAO delegate the development and maintenance of the Reference Client to the Foundation. This delegation would be reviewed and renewed every 12 months. This delegation would empower the Foundation to: * Communicate and execute a solid roadmap both for community developers and users * Build a richer feature set (e.g. better in-world navigation, social interaction, and content moderation tools) * Ensure that the client is faster and more stable * Improve the quality and performance of the client’s graphics * Improve the client’s ability to support more concurrent users
Again, I think most of us trust Foundation, but where is this roadmap? How can we vote on this without one, and also how is this moving towards decentralization? I was not answered on the round before.
I couldn't agree more with @ckbubbles on this, and I'm voting 'No' on this proposal to emphasize this point. Sending a roadmap, or at least **some** degree of leadership/direction/clarity on **what** we're voting on should be a necessity and not something we should ask for. Ultimately this vote will pass, thanks to the last-minute VP we knew would show up to support this. I've been monitoring this proposal, just casually waiting for the large million-VP wallets to swoop in and ensure it passes. This (ironically) makes me feel far calmer about voting 'No', as I can rest assured that our 'No' vote will not hinder your progress/work (which we **do** respect and support). However, this does not discount the fact that decisions like this should not be made this way, and this is not a best practice for mobilizing your community behind one co-owned agenda.

The AMAs and other opportunities to communicate directly between community members and foundation staff have been a dramatic improvement these past 5 months. I think the communication can be further improved. I'd also like to see a detailed roadmap from the foundation. Specifically I'd like to see how they plan to address the slow performance and freezes of laptops and desktops that are more than capable of running triple A title video games. I have been an advocate of reporting bugs and issues to the proper channels. It is my understanding that there is currently no one in the position of exclusively dealing with tracking and resolving bugs. In an open environment like DCL, where a neighbor's broken code can negatively impact another's scene, this absence will be more acutely felt when more parcels and estates are developed. Advanced notice of a platform update being pushed out to the servers would also be helpful. A common mantra in DCL is "That's weird. I wonder why that's happening?" Everyone doesn't need to know every little detail. It is nice to know that people that work on the platform regularly know there's a problem and are fixing it. Or if they aren't working on it now, they will be at a future date. When my oldest child was 10 years old he knew what bugs there were in Minecraft and which future release was coming to deal with it. He's now 18 and will soon be in the primary age group where a majority of out new DAUs(Daily Active Users) will come from. The assurance I felt after meeting directly with foundation staff in Miami this past November was a magnificent. I'd like that confidence and clarity to be shared by a majority of DCL's DAUs. That comes from constant efforts of improved communications.
